What I Wish I Knew Before I Started Playing Basketball

By Luca · Kid On Court

When I first started playing basketball, I thought it was mainly about having fun, learning some skills and playing games.

It is definitely fun, and that is still one of the biggest reasons I play. But as I started taking basketball more seriously, I realised there was much more to it.

The biggest thing I wish I knew before starting basketball is that moving into higher levels takes real commitment. You need to turn up, put in effort and sometimes make sacrifices for the game you love.

At the same time, basketball gives a lot back. It has helped me make good friends, become part of a team and share great experiences with people who love the game too.

Basketball can become more than something you do for fun

There is nothing wrong with playing basketball just for fun. That is how a lot of people begin, and enjoying the game is the most important part.

But if you decide you want to play at a higher level, basketball starts to require more from you. You cannot only turn up for games and expect to improve. You need to attend training, listen to your coaches, practise and keep putting in effort, even when you are tired or things are not going your way.

Improving takes commitment

Commitment means being there for your team and doing the work that comes with playing. You need to go to training regularly and try your best while you are there. You also need to keep practising the skills you want to improve instead of only doing them when a coach is watching.

There will be tough games, disappointing results and moments when you feel like you are not improving quickly enough. That is part of playing sport seriously. Your teammates are depending on you to learn the plays, understand your role and be ready to contribute.

What sacrifice means in junior basketball

When I say basketball takes sacrifice, I do not mean that you have to give up everything else in your life. It means choosing to give your time and energy to the sport. Training, games and practice become part of your week.

If you are part of a representative basketball team, there can be more sessions, more travel and a bigger expectation that you will turn up and work hard. The more you want to get out of basketball, the more effort you normally need to put into it.

Representative basketball feels different

Playing representative basketball is a big step up from playing socially or just for fun. The commitment is greater, but I love being around players who care about the game as much as I do. Everyone wants to compete, improve and help the team play well.

You begin to understand that being part of a team is about more than what happens when you have the ball. It is also about encouraging your teammates, listening, putting in effort and doing your job on the court.

The friendships make it worth it

One of the best things basketball has given me is friendship. You meet people who already have something in common with you because they love the game too. As you train and play together, you get to know each other properly and build a connection as a team.

Some of my favourite experiences have come from travelling away for competitions like state championships. Staying in cabins, hanging out between games and sharing the whole experience helps everyone become closer. You build stronger friendships and a better bond as a team.

What I would tell someone starting basketball

If you are just starting basketball, enjoy it and do not put too much pressure on yourself straight away. Learn the basics, listen to your coach and get to know the other players. You do not need to decide immediately how far you want to take it.

If you eventually want to play at a higher level, be ready to commit to training and put in real effort. It will not always be easy, but you can gain much more than basketball skills. You can become part of a team, travel to competitions, make close friends and create memories with people who love the same game as you.

Basketball takes commitment, but what you get from it can make the effort worth it.
